UNICEF and Child Friendly Education in Nigeria: A Case Study of Lagos State

Abstract:

The United Nations Convention of Rights of Child stipulates that every child is entitled to right to free, accessible and quality Child Friendly Education is a policy adopted by UNICEF to address the issues affecting the educational sector across the world. Nigeria is a major actor to several conventions one of which is the Convention on the Rights of the Child also called the (CRC), Education For All (EFA) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Following the inception of the Universal Basic Education in 1999, resources and efforts have been put in place to further the course of having an educated child populace and enhance growth and development especially for underdeveloped countries. When the statistics for out of school children were reviewed in 2015, the number of children in this category were very high and it stirred concern. Child-Friendly education is a means and method by which children whether adolescents or infants, can learn and develop skills needed to withstand harsh situations or circumstances in life.

Thus, this paper seeks to assess the level of implementation of child friendly education as stipulated by UNICEF in Lagos state.
