Use of Geographical Information Systems in Military Security The Impact of Geographical Information Systems on Military Security

Abstract:

The authors of this article analyze the role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in shaping military security. The primary research objective is to demonstrate that geospatial technologies currently constitute the foundation of defense operations, public order protection, and crisis management. The authors define GIS as an integrated system encompassing hardware, software, data, and human resources, used to collect and analyze spatial information using vector and raster models. In the military sector, these systems are absolutely essential to supporting decision-making and command processes. They are used, among other things, for convoy route planning, target analysis, enemy location monitoring, navigation, and logistical support. Military databases efficiently combine topographic conditions with specialized data such as critical infrastructure parameters and force potential and deployment. Furthermore, in the era of information warfare, GIS supports the monitoring and protection of strategic databases against cyber threats. The authors conclude that while geospatial information systems do not replace human judgment, they are an essential analytical tool that determines the effectiveness of security services and armed forces in threat environments.
