Use of Individual In-Depth Interviews (IDI) in Case Studies – Theoretical Background

Abstract:

Nowadays, scientists wanting to study a given research phenomenon more and more often use the case study method. Thanks to it, they obtain a comprehensive picture of the studied phenomenon, learn about the economic reality, thus identifying and solving problems faced by enterprises. Additionally, if during the case study study they use other research methods (e.g. individual IDI in-depth interviews), the formulated conclusions are very accurate and much more useful in practice. The aim of the article is to describe and characterize the possibility of using the technique of individual in-depth interviews (IDI) in a case study. The literature review of the issue under study was based on the method of systematic literature review, based on the methodology proposed by Tranfield, Denyer, Smart (Tranfield, Denyer, Smart; 2003). The authors conducted a literature review in three phases, preceded by the determination of the purpose of the study. The first phase included planning the review, the second phase is the proper conduct of the research procedure (this phase consists of five stages) and the last third phase of the preparation of the research report (Tranfield, Denyer, Smart; 2003).
