User Analytics as The Novel Approach Towards Personalization and Adaptation. Rudiments for User-Tailored Design

Abstract:

Dictum “Scientia potentia est”, credited commonly with the sixteenth century philosopher Francis
Bacon, in the modern world of information seems to be even more true than ever. Humans as the
information consumers and producers have created the market, where even sensitive, personal data can be trade objects. Every web application keeps track of our activities, every browser saves searching history and every social platform collects information about our relations and interests. That kind of knowledge can serve many purposes. The least of the users per se. The main beneficiaries are marketing and sales activities targeting potential customers. Nevertheless, if we look into health informatics or elearning, a new potential of data usage emerges. The great amount of information can give more comprehensive scope on patient condition in order to recommend more adequate treatment. As in the learner’s case the innate predispositions and learning curve indicate suitable teaching methods. Although intelligent solutions are applicable practically in every aspect of life, for many systems, still the benefits are not tangible, therefore developers and business owners do not find them profitable enough. It requires consecutive change in the way of thinking in terms of designing information systems in the user-centred paradigm. While we experience dynamic growth with ubiquitous expansion of the intelligent solutions and technologies, the new paradigm of user analytics for user-tailored design, and the areas that it can contribute to, is still yet to come.
