Video indexation by subtitles and its usage within the language learning process

Abstract:

Today, video resources are easily accessible for private usage either by broadcasts, physical media (e.g. DVD) or download (video-sharing platforms, Video on Demand). The primary purpose of these media is the entertainment of the customer. This paper presents an approach, how this immense amount of entertaining video material might be used for educational purposes in a non-expensive and effective way. It proposes the development of a generic language learning application which is executable on low-end devices for TV (set top box, DVD-player). The software allows the user to experience the usage and application of a foreign language in different contexts with the availability of auditive and textual representation. The software is able to handle every video material that fulfills a few requirements which are state-of-the-art in digital video. This allows the user to choose the video content based on his/her interests and to extend the software by applying additional video.
