Abstract:

Waste Management in Selected Primary Schools in Ogun State: A comparative Study It has been observed that little consideration is given to waste management Nigerian schools. The general appalling characteristics of waste handling in these schools continue to fester and seem as if there are no solutions. This is because most of the wastes are not removed, and that in spite of the citizens cleaning their immediate environment. Therefore, this inappropriate solid waste management practices in Nigerian schools, especially in major cities, create a major factor. This study therefore using a cross-sectional study to assessed the method of waste management in 10 selected schools in Ogun state Nigeria. The study further investigates if there is similarity in the type of waste and waste management methods as adopted by the selected schools. A comparative study was also carried out to find out if there is difference in the waste management method adopted by public and private schools in Ogun state. Using a t-test and regression analysis, the study observed that most schools in Ogun state, especially public schools do not have proper waste management system. It waste also observed that there is a significant difference in the method of waste management as adopted by private and public schools in Ogun state. It was further concluded that waste sorting is not practiced which makes recycling impracticable. The study therefore recommends that burning of refuse as practiced in some schools should not be done close to the class rooms. Government should also make provision for proper waste collection in schools.
