White-Labeling Software Products

Abstract:

Research on white-labeling of software products is virtually non-existent. In this paper, we investigate some aspects of white-labeling software products. We use three Dutch case studies to find out whether there are companies that white-label software, how they do this, what the possibilities are, and why they white-label software. We provide a new definition of a white-label software product. Where our case studies show different methods for white-labeling their software products and a lot of different reasons, there are almost no differences in their business models. An interesting finding is that all our case study companies are involved in only a small number of white-label products. Some of the main reasons for white-labeling we identified are: increasing revenues, providing a complete package of services, being able to specifically channel the software to specific markets, and lower costs when entering new markets.
